Chapter Eleven
He'd sweet-talked a nurse into telling him where Lara's purse was. He hoped her keys were in it, and was irritated when he couldn't find them. So, here he stood in front of her apartment door, pulling his lock-picking set from his back pocket. He really should call the crime scene team out here to process this place.
He would if he found something that warranted it. A part of him wanted it all to be something mundane and explainable. Some pharmacist had filled her prescriptions incorrectly. The meds had been contaminated at the factory.
But the scratches on the lock of her front door had his instincts yelling that it was otherwise. Somebody had broken into this door. The scratches could have been made by a thief a week ago, a month ago, maybe even a year or more ago. Maybe the crime scene guys could tell.
"Well, shit." He remembered Lara's neighbor had seen someone claiming to be a police officer trying to get in the same way he was. Once he'd had a look at the apartment for himself, he'd go over and talk to her. He bent to slip the picks into the lock.
"Who are you?"
The woman's question made him jerk, as though she'd caught him breaking in.
Which, of course, she had. He turned to face his accuser.
The door across the hall was opened a crack and he could see one dark eye peering out at about the four-foot-level.
"It's okay. I'm a cop."
"Yeah, that's what the other one said."
"What other one?"
"The lady cop who was here the other day. She said just what you did." She sniffed. "I didn't believe it then." She studied his face. "You're the cop who was here the other night when Cesar..." She stopped. "How is Lara?"
"She's resting at the hospital, Ms.--"
"Mrs. Gonzales. Show me some identification, if you're really a cop."
He pulled his ID out and held it up.
"Give it to me. I don't see so good."
He hesitated, but, if this woman had seen someone breaking in a couple of days ago, he wanted her to trust him and talk to him. So, he handed over his ID.
The woman pulled it through the small opening and studied it so long he wondered if he'd get it back.
"You don't look like no Andersen."
"I'm a breed."
She grunted and closed the door. He heard the scraping of the chain and then she opened the door. "Come in."
She was as wide as she was tall, dressed in a flowered muu-muu. Kurt had never seen anyone who looked so much like a couch as Mrs. Gonzales. She was the typical abuela, who cooked for everyone and enjoyed her own cooking as much as anyone.
"Could I have my ID back now, abuela?"
"I ain't your grandmother, Detective Andersen." She handed over his ID.
"I apologize. You remind me of my grandmother."
"Is that supposed to soften me up?"
Tough one, this old lady. He wondered why she was so suspicious of the cops. But that would be another case and he had enough on his plate right now.
